Skimz has launched a trio of biopellet reactors to fit aquariums up to 2,000 liters (around 530 US gallons). The three reactors – the Skimz BR83, Skimz BR103 and Skimz BR153 Biopellet Reactors – feature DC pumps with a variable speed controller and a bottom-fed conical design to get a nice churn of the media to prevent clumping and channeling.

Of the three, the Skimz BR83 is the smallest, rated for aquariums up to 100 gallons. The Skimz BR83 is fitted with a VSC1200-DC (1,200 l/h) pump that lets you control the flowrate using the variable speed controller and can hold up to 400ml of media. The BR83’s bracket can be used as a hang-on or attach horizontally to the brace of the tank. The bracket will fit up to 19mm thick glass or acrylic.

The Skimz BR103 is the middle version for aquariums up to 1,000 liters (around 265 US gallons) that is also fitted with a larger version of the DC pump, VSC2000-DC (2,000 l/h), and can hold up to 1,000 ml of media.

If you still need more capacity, try the Skimz BR153 that features the larger VSC3000-DC pump (3,000 l/h), can hold up to 2,000 ml of media and is rated for aquarium: up to 2,000 liters.

Biopellet media has recently become popular method of removing nitrates from the aquarium. Biopellets are made primarily of a biodegradable polymer which provides a food source to beneficial bacteria that eliminate unwanted nitrate within the reactor.

The new Skimz BR103 Biopellet Reactor is fitted with WP-VSC2000 DC pump, which allows you to control the flowrate using the Variable Speed Controller. Together with the bottom-fed conical design, it helps to keep the biopellet media in constant motion and prevent clumping.

What is Dupla?

Dupla factory

Dupla Aquaristik GmbH – Bielefeld – Germany

The company Dupla Aquaristik GmbH was formed in 1978 by Horst Kipper. A hobbyist from boyhood, Horst Kipper spent the early years with Eheim and then Tetra, but decided to establish his own company where he could fully develop his ideas and turn these into exclusive and effective aquarium systems that would assist the average aquarist to achieve outstanding success in the aquarium. Together with his long-time friend and associate Kaspar Horst, EDTA, CO2, fertilisation, specific lighting, substrate, heating, etc. were developed.

Long before any environment and animal protectors campaigned for proper treatment of pets, the foreword of the Dupla Exclusive Contract for aquarium shops stated:

“Dupla and its partners commit to do what they can for the progressive protection of nature, animals and the environment; further, to observe any and all laws related to nature and animal protection and to conduct their business in an exemplary manner.”

In 1983 Kaspar Horst became Managing Director of Dupla Aquaristik GmbH, so that Horst Kipper could establish in Australia, a research facility for freshwater and marine aquaristics. This culminated in the building of Dupla Tropica, situated on the edge of the rain forest and a short distance from the sea in the Cairns region of Australia. From there, significant further contribution was made to the Dupla product line and the science of aquaristics in general.

In 1998 Jörg Plöger assumed the position of Managing Director, enabling Kaspar Horst to concentrate on his long-term profession, as editor and publisher of Aquarium Heute.

Dohse Aquaristik KG – Grafschaft, Germany

In October 2003 the well-respected firm Dohse Aquaristik KG acquired the national and international rights and products of Dupla. This enabled the important next step for the development and strengthening of the Dupla product line.  Dohse Aquaristik KG is a long-established family business that has been successfully producing aquarium products since its formation in 1949. With over 65 years experience in the aquaristic industry producing the HOBBY line, now the DUPLA line – itself with over 36 years history – is added to this solid foundation and continues as an independent range. Jörg Plöger was also appointed as Sales Manager, therefore facilitating continuity of this benchmark line.

Dohse Aquaristik KG is now in its third generation under the control of its Managing Director – Axel Pinders. Although there are many new developments in progress, some things will not change. Established and proven products will not be altered, and original formulations are retained except where a distinct improvement can be demonstrated. The optimisation of the living conditions of fish and the handling security for the aquarist remain the main goal against which, all activities are measured.

Skimz Biopellet Reactor includes a new nano hang-on model

By Jake Adams of Reefbuilders on Aug 18, 2014

Skimz has a new Biopellet Reactor coming to market in three sizes to take advantage of the nutrient reducing properties of the biopolymer. The Skimz Biopellet Reactor is unique in being bottom-fed and does away with the sometimes awkward internal inlet pipe. Skimz uses one of their own branded pumps through a conical base which helps to keep the biopellet media in constant motion and prevent clumping.

Skimz’s new biopellet reactors will come in three sizes, the BR80, BR100 and BR150 which can hold between 400 and 2000ml of biopellet media. The two larger BR100 and BR150 have tube diameters of 100 and 150mm respectively and can also be outfitted with sponges to reduce the churning that they are designed for to convert them into capable media reactors for phosphate remover and carbon.

Arguably the most interesting of the three sizes of Skimz Biopellet Reactors is the smallest BR80, a diminutive hang on affair with a holding capacity just barely more than that of a media bag. Besides having the same conical bottom for even biopellet mixing, the BR80 uses an oversize union valve on its topside to access the media reactor volume.

The use of a union valve instead of a lineup of nylon screws makes the BR80 a much easier device to service and maintain and we wish that Skimz had implemented a similar solution for the larger BR100 and BR150, but union valves in those diameters would also make them large and cumbersome. Skimz has a proven track record of making nice and affordable acrylic products that are durable and we expect the same for their new line of Biopellet Reactors.
